After the revolution against the Turcs in 1821 Aghia Sophia was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, because it was considered a faithful copy of the Aghia Sophia in Constantinople.

The church of Aghia Sophia is an impressive ecclesiastical architectural monument of the 12th century and is the only building that remains almost intact in the Upper Town of Monemvasia. The church is built on the castle of Monemvasia, above the sea on the edge of a rock,
